USED TO / USUALLY / TO BE USED TO / GET USED TO

En mis clases en Talking with Cambridge House, he notado que esto suele confundir mucho a mis alumnos. Porque es verdad que las estructuras se parecen mucho, pero una vez que lo has entendido, es fácil usarlas correctamente. Por eso, ¡a te voy a explicar cómo! ☺

Used to + infinitive (solía hacer algo)

Empleamos esta estructura para hablar de cosas que antes solíamos hacer en el pasado pero que ya NO hacemos.

Ejemplos

  • I used to live in London, now I live in Madrid.  (Solía vivir en Londres, ahora vivo en Madrid).
  • She used to be married, but she then she got divorced.   (Solía estar casada, pero luego se divorció).

How to use in the negative: 

Cuando hacemos una fase negativa o interrogativa en el pasado, quitamos la “d” y usamos

USE  –  no USED

Ejemplos

  • Before, I didn´t use to like salmon.   (Antes no me gustaba el salmón).
  • They didn´t use to have Netflix, now they do.  (No solían tener Netflix, ahora sí).

How to use in the interrogative: 

  • Did you use to live in Manchester?  (¿Solías vivir en Manchester?).
  • Did she use to wear glasses?  (¿Solía llevar gafas?).

Usually: (suele hacer algo)

Cuando hablamos de hábitos en el presente, usamos usually.

NB: Es un error bastante común usar used to en vez de usually para hablar del presente.

Ejemplos

  • I usually go swimming at the weekend   (Suelo ir a nadar los fines de semana).
  • He usually speaks to me.   (Me suele hablar). 
  • We don’t usually go there.    (No solemos ir allí).
  • Do you usually arrive late?   (¿Sueles llegar tarde?).

To be used to + gerund: (estar acostumbrado a hacer algo)

To be used to + ing

To be used to + noun

Ejemplos   

  • I’m used to going to bed at 10 pm.         (Me he acostumbrado a acostarme a las 10). 
  • I’m used to an earlier bedtime.           (Estoy acostumbrado a acostarme antes).

In the negative:

To be (not) used to + ing                         To be (not) used to + noun

Ejemplos

  • I’m not used to having dinner at 6 pm.       (No estoy acostumbrado a cenar a las 6 de la tarde).
  • I’m not used to an early dinner.          (No estoy acostumbrado a una cena tan temprana).
  • She isn’t used to speaking so much English.     (No está acostumbrada a hablar tanto en inglés).

In the interrogative:

  • Are you used to speaking so much English?       (¿Estás acostumbrado a hablar tanto en inglés?).
  • Is she used to eating meat now?                          (¿Está acostumbrado a comer carne ahora?).

Get used to + gerund    (Acostumbrándote a algo)

To get used to + ing                          To get used to + noun

  • I am getting used to living in a smaller flat.         (Me estoy acostumbrado a vivir en un piso más pequeño).
  • I am getting used to my small flat.        (Me estoy acostumbrando a un piso más pequeño).
  • I got used to having dinner later.         (Me acostumbré a cenar más tarde).
  • I’ll get used to it eventually.      (Me acostumbraré al final).

In the negative:

  • I never got used to getting up so early.         (Nunca me acostumbré a levantarme tan pronto).
  • He’ll never get used to finishing so late.       (Nunca se acostumbrará a terminar tan tarde).

In the interrogative:

  • Have you got used to watching TV in origin al version now?    (¿Te has acostumbrado a ver la tele en VO?).

e.g.   I used to go to school but now I work.     (Solía ir al colegio pero ahora trabajo).

         I usually get up about 8am.     (Suelo levantarme a las 8).

         I’m used to watching series in original version.    (Estoy acostumbrado a ver las series en VO).

        I couldn’t get used to having dinner at 6pm like the British.    (No podía acostumbrarme a cenar a las 6).
