El 4 de octubre fue el Día Mundial de Los Animales. Cada vez tenemos más mascotas y la gente toma conciencia en mayor medida de la necesidad de proteger a nuestros animales y respetar sus derechos fundamentales de vida. ¡Ya era hora! ¿Verdad? ☺

Para celebrarlo, te voy a enseñar unas frases hechas típicas que usamos en inglés relacionadas con los animales. La verdad es que hay muchas, porque en los EEUU y en UK nos gustan mucho nuestras mascotas (pets) y muchos hogares tienen al menos una. En inglés usamos muchas frases hechas en la conversación diaria y si las sabes utilizar bien, ¡te vas a quedar con la gente!

  • It’s raining cats and dogs!  (Llueve a cantaros)
    “We can’t leave now – it’s raining cats and dogs! Let’s wait a while.”
  • To kill two birds with one stone.  (Matar dos pájaros de un tiro)
    “If we do that, we can kill two birds with one stone – so, win, win!”
  • To let the cat out of the bag. (Revelar un secreto por error)
    “Oh no! He’s just let the cat out of the bag – he didn’t know about the party!”
  • A little bird told me. (Me lo dijo un pajarito)
    “How did you know that?”   – “Ah, a little bird told me!”
  • The elephant in the room.”  (El elefante en la habitación)
    “We have to mention this because it’s the elephant in the room. We can’t ignore it.”
  • Hold your horses! (Espera un momento!)
    “Wait! Hold your horses – we’re not ready to go yet!”
  • To be Pig-headed (ser cabezón/a)
    “He’s so pig-headed sometimes – he just won’t accept when he’s wrong.”
  • To go/quit cold turkey   (dejar algo de repente)
    “How did you stop smoking?! – “I went cold turkey and gave it up from one day to the next.”
  • To go to the dogs (ir cuesta abajo)
    “This district has really gone to the dogs. It used to be so nice and now it’s awful!”
  • To feel like a fish out of water (sentirse extraño e incómodo en alguna situación)
    “I went to the party but I felt like a fish out of water there – everybody was more intelligent than me!”
  • To watch s/o like a hawk (mirar a alguien fijamente, sin quitar ojo)
    “She was watching me like a hawk all night – I couldn’t escape!”

Ahora te toca intentar usar estas frases hechas en una situación apropiada. Úsalas en tus clases de inglés en Cambridge House Online y tu profesor y compañeros de clase quedarán impresionados. ☺

Y si las empleas bien en la parte oral o escrita de los exámenes de Cambridge (First B2, Advanced C1 o Proficiency C2) ¡podrás obtener mejor nota!

Useful Vocabulary to talk about animals:

  • To look after a pet (cuidar)
  • To take the dog for a walk (pasear al perro)
  • To feed the dog (dar de comer al perro)
  • A dog wears a collar, a lead and sometimes a muzzle.  (Un perro lleva un collar, un correa y a veces un bozal)
  • The dog sleeps in a dog basket, on a blanket or in a kennel. (El perro duerme en una cama, en una manta o en una caseta de perro)
  • The bird lives in a cage. (El pájaro vive en una jaula)
  • The vet gives the dog an injection / his shots. (El veterinario pone al perro una inyección / sus vacunas) 
  • Birds have feathers, wings and beaks.  (Los pájaros tienen plumas, alas y picos)
